In financial services, a money manager is a general term for a financial professional in the asset management arena. The role most likely to come to mind when the term money manager is mentioned is the portfolio manager of a mutual fund. Certainly any list of money manager greats would include top fund managers such as John Templeton, Peter Lynch, and Howard Stein. Today, many would include in the money manager ranks the minds behind alternative investment vehicles, too, such as venture capital firms and hedge funds. Examples would be George Soros, John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Warren Buffett. An important distinction between the traditional mutual fund money manager and the alternative money manager that is worth mentioning is the tendency for the latter to share risk with the investors who entrust their capital to the money manager. An emerging standard designation for a professional money manager is the Chartered Financial Analyst, or CFA.
