A mutual fund symbol is a group of letters and/or numbers that helps identify a mutual fund; so a mutual fund symbol is a type of ticker symbol. A modern mutual fund symbol typically has letters only, and each mutual fund symbol is coded with five letters, ending in X (ticker symbols for stocks will not have the X, and may have fewer than five letters). Since there is an "X" at the end of a mutual fund symbol, there will never be an "X" as the fourth letter of the coding. This "X" in the mutual fund symbol helps you to quickly identify a mutual fund. If you see a symbol that is five letters long with an "X" in the fourth and fifth spots, it isn't a mutual fund symbol; rather it's a money market symbol. One example of a mutual fund symbol is VFINX, Vanguard's Index 500 fund.
