Nifty Fifty

The HTML to link to this page

The Nifty Fifty were fifty blue chip stocks that enjoyed strong popularity during the bull market of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some examples of the Nifty Fifty include IBM, JC Penney, SS Kresge, Polaroid, and Halliburton. The Nifty Fifty were the driving force behind this strong bull market; they enjoyed high price/earnings ratios and consistent growth of earnings. The stock prices of the Nifty Fifty were driven up to excessively high levels before they tumbled down in the 1973-1974 bear market. Now, some of these Nifty Fifty stocks are worthless or out of business; others have merged with or been acquired by other companies. Currently, many Nifty Fifty stocks are still in strong shape and continue to perform well; several Nifty Fifty stocks make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
