XR

The letters XR are an abbreviation for ex-rights. Stocks that appear with the symbol XR are trading ex-rights or without rights attached. Before going into XR status, existing shareholders are given a right to buy new or additional issues of common stock at a discount. The right usually lasts two to four weeks and when that time passes, the shares are sold ex-rights and listed as XR. When stocks are bought XR, new shareholders are not entitled to the rights that were previously available. All XR stocks are given an expiration date. Other than expiring, stocks listed as XR might have been transferred to another investor or exercised. Shares listed as XR are worth less than shares that have not yet reached XR status.
